Parody by StellaB (2020)

Impostor Blues

This project was inspired by the video game, Among Us. I worked with my friend Letitia to write this parody and we wanted to write it about something that interested us and would be fun to write about. My friends and I have been using Among Us as an excuse to get together online since there haven’t been as many opportunities to see friends recently. We wanted the parody to have some meaning other than describing the game, so we decided to write it from the perspective of a character in the game. Since the game is based on deception, we wanted to add an element of surprise to the parody. We decided to do a parody of the song "Boys Will be Bugs" by Cavetown since it has a relatively simple melody and it’s a song both of us knew.

The most challenging part of this production was recording the vocals. I thought editing would be the hardest part, but I was pleasantly surprised at how skills from previous projects I had done transferred over to this project. The main reason recording was difficult was because of how many times I had to re-record it. I had done an initial recording and edited it but got feedback that what I was saying was unclear. I had no idea that the lyrics were unclear because I knew exactly what I was saying and didn’t take into account that listeners wouldn’t be familiar with the lyrics like I was. If I did this project again, I would add in more of the background vocals to add more dynamics to the parody. One thing I’m most proud of with this project is how I cut out a whole part of the song and was able to make the transitions sound somewhat smooth using Pro Tools.

From this project, I learned that it’s important to get feedback from others since they’ll often pick up on things you didn’t even notice. I also learned that it takes many different attempts to get the best take and that nothing is perfect on the first try. What I learned from this project will definitely be helpful in future Freestyle projects and in any future project, whether it’s for school or even for a job. Understanding Pro Tools is a great skill to have for the future and I look forward to using my understanding of Pro Tools to maybe produce my own music one day. From this project, I can see how everyone’s thoughts and ideas can transfer into a project to create things that are truly original.
